Miss Delaware 2014 disqualified for being 'too old'

The dream was short-lived for 24-year-old American Amanda Longacre: two weeks after being crowned Miss Delaware 2014 the beauty has been stripped of her title because she has been deemed too old.

The Miss America pageant rules require contestants to be between the ages of 17 and 24.

Ms Longacre, who won the crown on June 14, will turn 25 in October.

Longacre had won the Miss Pike Creek title to qualify for the state pageant.

She says Miss Delaware officials had approved her and confirmed her eligibility after receiving copies of her birth certificate and driver’s license.

The disqualified beauty then says she was sat down earlier this week and told she couldn’t be older than 24 during her year with the crown.

The turn of events means Ms Longacre has to forfeit about $US11,000 ($11,600) in scholarships from the local and state competitions, as well as her Miss Delaware contract.

First runner-up Brittany Lewis will now be awarded the crown.
