As many as two million people are expected to pack out central Berlin later today as the world celebrates the fall of the wall that divided Germany during the Cold War.

It is 25 years today since the Berlin Wall was finally torn down, marking the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the simmering conflict between America and the communist superpower.

Germany is celebrating the anniversary in style with Peter Gabriel set to play in concert.

Hundreds of thousands of people have travelled from all over the world to join the resident Berliners in their celebrations.

The route the wall once followed has been marked with 8000 glowing balloons, which will be released at the climax of the event, in a fitting tribute to the seminal event.
