Iran's supreme religious leader has reportedly taken to social media to blast "racist" US police.

A Twitter account, believed to be operated by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's personal office, has offered solidarity with American protesters.

"It’s expected that followers of #Jesus follow him in his fight against arrogants and in his support for the oppressed. #BlackLivesMatter", one tweet read.

Later the account tweeted: "#Jesus endured sufferings to oppose tyrants who had put humans in hell in this world the hereafter while he backed the oppressed. #Ferguson".

The comments raised an eyebrow on social media, given Iran’s abysmal human rights record.

Khamenei's account had previously tweeted about the Ferguson riots.

Tensions are rising across the US between police and protesters after a string of incidents that saw unarmed black civilians killed by police.

Two police officers in New York were also recently murdered by a gunman who then took his own life.
