A Melbourne teen who left the country last year was responsible for a suicide attack in Iraq that killed five people last week.

Attorney-General George Brandis's office confirmed the boy was 17 when he left Australia and had turned 18 when he detonated a belt bomb in a busy marketplace in Baghdad, News Corp reports.

The suicide bomber is believed to have travelled to Syria late last year before recently entering Iraq to become a martyr for terror group ISIS.

ISIS hailed the boy as a "knight" claimed he detonated his bomb belt near a Shi'ite mosque and injured up to 90 people.

Sydney's Muslim leaders condemned the suicide attack.
