Marco Rubio, who made an unsuccessful bid to be the Republican nominee for president this year, has been reelected as a senator for Florida.

Mr Rubio, a Cuban-American conservative, had previously vowed not to run for re-election to the Senate.

“I have only said like 10,000 times I will be a private citizen in January,” he tweeted in May, after dropping out of the presidential race.

The 45-year-old ended his presidential run after he failed to win the Republican primary in Florida, coming in second to Donald Trump.

Mr Rubio’s re-election is a win for the Republican party, as it awaits the results of the US election.

Florida is a key swing-state in the election, with both Hillary Clinton and Mr Trump campaigning there multiple times in the past week.

The state saw record numbers swarm to the polls early, with nearly 6.5 million votes cast before the polls opened today.
