Manus Island refugees left 'homeless' with accommodation unfinished

Video from Manus Island shows new refugee accommodation still under construction, with one resident complaining that many have been left without a place to sleep.

The video, taken by refugee Ezathullah Kalar, shows unfinished buildings and partially cemented paths.

Mr Kalar resident also claims there is no access to electricity.

The footage shows one man digging a hole beside a concrete mixer, and construction workers studying a segment of pipe.

A construction crane can also be seen beyond a fence, and detainees outside an office.

“People are still homeless and looking for rooms,” Mr Kalar said.

“Everyone is upset about their future.”

It comes just days after asylum seekers and refugees were forcibly removed from the previous detention facility, where they had stayed for three weeks since it was decommissioned, citing fears they faced violence elsewhere.

All 378 men were escorted from the male-only camp by police and immigration officials on Thursday and Friday, and were taken by bus to alternative accommodation in the nearby town of Lorengau.

According to refugee advocates, officials used force and destroyed asylum seekers' belongings to force them to leave.

Water, power and food supplies ended when the Manus camp officially closed on October 31, following a court ruling that Australia's policy of housing asylum seekers there was unconstitutional.

Asylum seekers have said they fear for their safety in Lorengau due to threats from local residents.
