Man walks into house he thinks is his and kills homeowner, believing he's an intruder

A Missouri man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after mistaking a neighbour's house for his own and killing the homeowner, believing him to be an intruder.

Police suspect Michael G. Augustine of being drunk at the time he allegedly choked his neighbour to death.

Augustine, 43, called police last week to report an intruder. A statement from Raytown Police revealed Augustine "said that he had the intruder pinned down in his front yard".

When police arrived at the address, there was nobody there.

On searching the area, officers found Augustine a block away from his own home, restraining Clifton King, 60, in a choke hold.

King did not have a pulse and although police attempted to revive him, he was pronounced dead in hospital.

Court documents record that officers at the scene said Augustine smelled of alcohol and his speech was slurred and incoherent.

They also claimed Augustine said, "That’s right. I f---ed him up," as police officers were checking for King's pulse.

A neighbour who did not want to be named told WDAF-TV of King, who she said was a military veteran:

"He served our country and that was not an honorable way to treat him."

"Someone had to give up their life because someone was so messed up they didn’t know it wasn’t their home."

Bail was set at $150,000, but WDAF-TV said neighbours claim Augustine had already posted bail and moved out of the area.

The maximum sentence for first-degree involuntary manslaughter is 10 years in jail.
