Man throws away winning lotto tickets

A regular lottery player in the US will be kicking himself after finally hitting the jackpot but throwing away the winning ticket.

The Pennsylvania man could have claimed $1.3 million but reportedly tossed his tickets after incorrectly reading the winning numbers.

Wendy Hinton, who sold the tickets, said the customer regularly buys 20 to 25 tickets a day, always using the same numbers.

But when his numbers finally came up on March 13 last year the man badly misread the situation and threw away the tickets valued at more than $53,000 each.

"He was mad," Ms Hinton, who works at Zhou Grocery in York, Pennsylvania said.

"He was so mad he played $400 that day."

Pennsylvania Lottery issued a press release in February in an attempt to locate the winner but the call went unanswered.

Lottery spokeswoman Lauren Bottaro said the organisation tries to notify winners "but sometimes, it's just not enough."
