Man serenades dying 93-year-old wife

An elderly couple has proved romance never dies, with video showing a US man delicately serenading his blind 93-year-old wife as she lay in a hospice bed.

“I always was your sweetheart,” Howard said to his wife Laura, as he leaned over her hospital bed and stroked her hair, in a tender scene filmed by their granddaughter, Erin Solari.

Ms Solari uploaded the video to her Facebook on September 12, and it has since been viewed almost four million times.

“I was your best lover, I don’t know how many others you had, but I was the best,” Howard said, before Laura stirred and responded, “Oh I know it,” prompting rapturous laughter from her husband.

She then said, “I love you, I love you. Okay. Behave,” as Howard continued to stroke her hair and a version of the love song “You’ll Never Know”, made famous by Alice Faye in the 1943 film Hello, Frisco, Hello, began to play.

The pair, married for 73 years, then began singing together as they held each other.

“You ought to know, for I haven’t told you so,” they sang, before Howard continued, “So, a million or more times. You’ll never know, just how much I care.”

“Now if I try, I still couldn’t hide, my love for you,” he sings.

Laura then turned to her family and said, “Isn’t he sweet?”, before saying, “He likes me!”, prompting laughter in the room as the song continued.

Ms Solari said the song is what her grandmother would sing when Howard was away fighting in World War II.

In the Facebook post, she said her grandmother had been deemed well enough by the hospice staff to return home to live out her final days, where her family is making her as comfortable as possible.
