A stranger armed with just a fire extinguisher has risked his own life to pull a woman and her baby granddaughter from a burning wreck of a car.

The fiery crash happened on a US highway in the state of Mississippi last week after the car slammed into a semi-trailer and caught on fire, the local Sun Herald newspaper reports.

Footage posted online today shows one van swerve around the fiery wreckage and continue driving while others pull up behind the accident scene.

A man dressed in a purple singlet can then be seen running toward the blaze with a fire extinguisher.

Others come to the man’s aid as he blasts the car with foam before wrenching the door open.

The man and others then pull what appears to be a baby from the car just before flames overtake the vehicle once again.

Both the woman and her granddaughter escaped with minor injuries but were taken to hospital for observation, the Sun Herald reports.

The son of the hero in the purple singlet, who posted the footage online, said his father was surprised to have been the first to jump in and help while everyone else stayed in their vehicles.

“When he went to pull the child out of the car the smoke made it very difficult for him to breathe and his only thought was getting the child out of the vehicle,” the son said.
