Man filmed abandoning dog in snow

A man has been filmed tying up a dog and abandoning it in the freezing New York cold before walking away.

Oddly enough, after turning his back on the animal the man makes the sign of the cross before disappearing into the night.

Staff at the Riverside Animal Hospital, where the animal was dumped, found the 12-year-old chow chow later that morning and rushed him in for treatment.

"He was in terrible condition," veterinarian Georgia Weber told The Blaze.

"He had such severe matting on his coat. It looked like no one had groomed him in forever."

Doctor Weber said it took three technicians four hours to shave his coat.

"Then he was sitting crying in a cage here on Sunday just with me, not knowing where he was, not knowing what had happened to him,” Weber said.

"What he does know is he's been abandoned."

Staff at the clinic had been preparing to euthanize the dog due to a lack of available resources needed to care for him, but after his story made the news, hundreds of donations began flooding in, giving the animal a new lease on life.

The hospital is now sifting through a flood of potential adoptive families who contacted them offering to give the chow chow a new home.
