A male passenger suffered a cardiac arrest and died during the flight, according to a St John's ambulance spokeswoman.

A nurse was on board and helped cabin crew with their attempts to resuscitate the man, a Qantas spokesman confirmed to nine.com.au.

Paramedics met the plane on arrival back in Auckland, but the man had already died.

Qantas confirmed flight QF152 was at full capacity this morning. The full Boeing 737-800 was carrying 174 passengers.

The plane was refuelled before taking off again, bound for Melbourne.
