The shooting on a frosty New York morning sparked a week-long manhunt for the suspect.
The drip-feed of information from investigators spread online like wildfire.
Here's how the alleged crime and arrest of Luigi Mangione unfolded.
The CEO of a major healthcare company in the US was shot to death outside the New York Hilton Hotel about 6.45am on Wednesday, December 4.
Brian Thompson, chief executive of UnitedHealth, was taken to a hospital but could not be saved.
The shooter fled on foot and then took an e-bike into Central Park, according to the New York Police Department.
Thompson, 50, was set to speak at an investor meeting.
He had served as CEO for more than three years and had been with the company since 2004.
UnitedHealthcare is the largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans in the US and manages health insurance coverage for employers and state-and federally funded Medicaid programs.
The New York police department sprang into action.
Pictured are members of the New York police crime scene unit as they pick up cups marking the spots where bullets lie as they investigate the scene outside the Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan where Brian Thompson was shot.
The words "deny," "defend" and "depose" were written on the spent bullet casings.
The words echo a phrase commonly used to describe insurer tactics to avoid paying claims.

Images of the suspected shooter began to emerge from security cameras across New York.
The New York Police Department released these photos on Thursday, December 5.
The suspect was seen checking into the HI New York City Hostel at 891 Amsterdam Avenue on the night of November 24.
Earlier that day, the suspected shooter arrives in New York City on a Greyhound bus at the Port Authority terminal.
The bus originated in Atlanta and made six or seven stops on the way to New York.
Police could not immediately determine where he got on the bus.
The man then took a taxi to the area of the New York Hilton Midtown and was there for about a half hour.
After the shooting, investigators announced the suspect left New York from the George Washington Bridge Bus Station about 7.30am.
CNN obtained footage of the gun used by the shooter.
It was later reported to be a "ghost gun" made from 3D-printed parts.
More photos of the suspected shooter were released by police in an attempt to track him down.
