The last time a Powerball jackpot accumulated to $80 million, more than 4000 tickets were sold in the space of a minute.

And lottery officials expect a similar flurry at the end of the work day, with the same amount up for grabs in tonight's draw.

At 5.27pm on a Thursday afternoon in July last year, 4367 tickets were sold in store and online in the space of 60 seconds.

The Lott spokesperson Lauren Cooney urged people to get in earlier to avoid the rush.

"We're certainly expecting it to get very busy this afternoon in stores and online as we near draw close at 7.30pm AEST," she said.

"I imagine there are a few people out there who have pre-written their resignation letters in their minds in the hope that their numbers are the ones drawn tonight."

At the end of 2019, The Lott released a list of the luckiest numbers to be drawn in Saturday lotteries.

The numbers 1, 8, 11, 7 and 40 have been drawn most frequently, while the unluckiest numbers are 44, 17, 35, 14 and 30.

Statistically, no number is more likely to be drawn than any other, but superstitious punters may look to the previous numbers in the hopes of taking home the biggest prize of the year so far.

As many as a quarter of Australians are expected to be buying a ticket for tonight's draw.

If one person wins the entire jackpot, they will become the equal third biggest lottery winner in Australian history.

It is only the eighth time the Powerball jackpot had accumulated to $80 million.
