Far-right French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen was pelted with eggs during a campaign stop in Brittany yesterday.

The controversial politician was in Dol-de-Bretagne, in the country's north west, when protesters threw a barrage of eggs at the Front National presidential hopeful.

In video the demonstrators can be heard shouting "Out with the fascists" and a hurled egg can be heard cracking on impact as it lands close to the blonde hair of Le Pen.

Bodyguards quickly ushered her into the building where she was due to give a campaign speech. She kept smiling throughout the incident.

About 50 people were believed to be demonstrating against the FN candidate who has stridently campaigned for cutting migrant numbers to France.

The incident came only one day after a bruising television debate between Le Pen and front runner centrist Emmanuel Macron who is tipped to be the victor in Sunday's final vote.

Macron has been backed by former US president Barack Obama who praised his "liberal values" in a video posted yesterday on the candidate's website, reports AFP.
