Kurz joins world leader's youth club

Austria's 31-year-old leader in waiting Sebastian Kurz will become the youngest world head of a country, joining an exclusive 'youth club' of prime ministers, monarchs and dictators.

After Kurz's conservative People's Party emerged the winner from Sunday's elections, the former law student could become Chancellor of Austria as soon as Friday when a coalition deal, likely to be with the far right Freedom Party, is struck.

He will join an exclusive club of millennial world leaders scattered around the globe including the 'Prince Charming' king of Bhutan, North Korea's sabre-rattling dictator and Estonia's internet-loving prime minister.

Here’s a look at the youthful trio and a few others scattered around the globe.

Vanessa D'Ambrosio

The 29-year-old stepped down from her position as Captain Regent of the European minnow state San Marino, reported Bloomberg. D'Ambrosio held the rotating head of state position for one year until October 1 this year.

Mohammed bin Salman

The power-hungry crown prince of Saudi Arabia is 32 and has been charged by his ailing father with modernising the country. So far he's made his mark by arresting clerics, academics and other government critics.

Kim John-Un

North Korea's uppity strongman is believed to be aged 33 and came to power aged only 27 when his father died. Earlier this year he was labelled a "crazy fat kid that's running North Korea" by US Senator John McCain.

Juri Ratas

Estonia's 38-year-old prime minister has made his mark by helping turn the tiny Baltic state into a digital powerhouse.

Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck

The king of the tiny mountain kingdom of Bhutan in Central Asia was labelled 'Prince Charming' when he visited Thailand this year. The Oxford Unversity educated 37-year-old is the fifth in line of hereditary rulers who have reigned in Bhutan over the past 100 years.

Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani

The British-educated Qatar Emir, 37, succeeded his father in 2013 and has continued to develop the Gulf state's vast economic wealth. A big sports enthusiast, watch out for him in 2022 when Qatar hosts the football World Cup.
