Instagram has just started working again after going down across Australia and a number of other countries for over an hour.with users unable to log in.

Users realised they were unable to login at about 5pm this evening.

There were also reports of the outage in the UK, Singapore, the US and parts of Europe.

Users took to other social media sites like Twitter and Facebook to vent frustration over the site being unavailable.

Users who tried to visit the site on desktop were greeted with a 5xx Server Error message.

On the mobile app the feed would not refresh and users were greeted with “We’re sorry, but something went wrong. Please try again.”

Queensland Police tweeted a warning to the public not to contact them about the issue as it is not a police matter.

"Instagram being down is not a police matter. You can post photos of food again soon enough," they tweeted.

The picture sharing app was sold to Facebook for US$1 billion in 2012 and earlier this week it was announced Adam Mosseri was the new head.

Instagram founders Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom resigned last month after reported conflict with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg over future plans for the company.
