Inept soldier drops live grenade at feet

A mishap with a live grenade has almost killed a recruit for China's 26th Army and his unit commander.

Video uploaded to file-sharing site LiveLeak shows the rookie soldier and his commander ducking behind a stone wall.

The pair appears to fiddle with something before standing up, with the soldier now holding a black object – a live training grenade - in his right hand.

Suddenly the soldier flings his arm back and looks to be throwing the object off into the distance, but instead of vanishing into the ether, the training grenade ricochets off the wall and lands at their feet.

Acting on instinct, the commander grabs his soldier and pulls him into a nearby safe ditch.

Seconds later, the training grenade explodes.

And you thought your first day on the job was tough.
