Vision from the International Space Station shows the sheer size of Typhoon Vongfong

As Typhoon Vongfong moves towards Japan’s main islands, remarkable vision from on board the International Space Station shows the sheer scale of the storm.

Several astronauts also tweeted photos from space of the massive storm cell, expected to be the most powerful system of 2014 in the region.

Packing winds of up to 180km/h, the super typhoon is expected to hit the Kyushu and Honshu islands in the coming days as it moves north.

Authorities have ordered more than 210,000 to evacuate from their homes and Vongfong is set to hit the Tokyo region tomorrow.

At least 35 people were injured in Okinawa when devastating winds lashed the southernmost tip of the country, including two who had their fingers cut off by slamming doors.

"These are two separate cases, but in both cases they lost one of their fingers as the door closed violently due to the strong winds," a local official told AFP, adding that one of the pair was a nine-year-old girl.

Vongfong comes less than a week after another powerful storm – Typhoon Phanfone – hit Japan, killing 11 people.
