Humpback whale breach stuns kayakers

A group of kayakers in Canada have almost been flattered by an adult humpback whale after it breached just metres from their boats.

The tour group first spotted the whale nursing her calf and stayed for about 30 minutes until the whales disappeared underwater.

"There's not a whole lot you can do when the humpbacks decide they're going to move," kayaker Heather Lawrence told CBC News.

"We thought they were gone... And that's when they really set off a show."

After disappearing underwater, the pod of whales then swam closer to the kayakers, forcing the tour guide to yell at the group with urgency to paddle backwards.

"The baby jumped, and that was like, 'Wow, that's amazing’,” Ms Lawrence said.

“But then the mom came up right away and she's humongous compared to baby."

Wildcoast Adventures uploaded vision of the whale breach to its YouTube channel after the August 10 sighting. The video has been viewed more than 20,000 times.
