Guatemala shaken by fatal mudslide, earthquake

Guatemala is dealing with two natural disasters which struck in quick succession, as video emerges of a mountain road being covered by what appears to be a waterfall of dirt and rock.

A landslide in the Central American nation has killed at least 12 people, with authorities fearing the death toll will rise.

The mudslide on Tuesday took out a minibus carrying ten people to work in San Pedro Soloma, killing everybody on board.

Video posted on Streamable yesterday shows what a mudslide looks like on a smaller scale, with drivers on a mountainside road gawking as the cliff behind them gives way.

The dirt and rock fall like water, wiping out the road and leaving drivers stranded.

Landslides are common in Guatemala during the rainy season.

Meanwhile, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake was reported off the Pacific coast, damaging the UNESCO World Heritage site of Antigua Guatemala overnight.

Antigua Guatemala is the former colonial capital of the nation, but the capital was relocated because of persistent damaging earthquakes.

There are no immediate reports of casualties from the earthquake.
