'Looks like little dinosaurs': Florida in the grips of an iguana invasion

Florida is in the grips of an invasion, under attack from hundreds of thousands of creatures terrifying locals.

They're not dinosaurs, but green iguanas, that are flooding the streets, digging up people's property and defecating in their pools.

Dawn Braeske, manager of Cooper Colony Golf and Country Club, said she spends hundreds of dollars every year trying to get rid of the invasive species.

"They will just go running, and you see what looks like little dinosaurs running away from you," she told Fox News.

"When you see hundreds a day, as you're driving around our golf course, that's just not fun anymore."

Iguana catching is big business, with some companies saying they catch upwards of 100 a day.

One removal business said they've pulled the creatures out of all sorts of places, including toilets, pools, and off rooves.

The green iguanas are known to burrow under houses causing structural damage, breed prolifically, and can spread diseases such as salmonella.

They are not native to the area but are flourishing in the warm Florida conditions. Previously some would die off during cool periods of the year, however rising temperatures have done nothing to curb the population boom.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has previously encouraged residents to kill them if they're captured on their property.
