International travellers regularly cite the ACT city as a great eco-friendly destination.
9. Wellington
The city with the cleanest air in New Zealand is the capital Wellington.
Known as "Windy Wellington", the natural high winds help shift toxic air pollutants out of the city, but the city's structure, which has controlled urban sprawl, also means all citizens live close to their working spaces or can easily reach them on public transport.
9. Sucre
The city of Sucre in Bolivia's southern highlands, standing 2800 metres above sea level, enjoys cool temperatures all year round.
Government environment measures have also helped maintain low pollution levels.
7. Nuku'alofa
Nuku'alofa, the capital of the Pacific island nation Tonga, is ranked in seventh place.
Its air quality has endured the massive pollution caused by the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai submarine volcano eruption in December 2021.
6. Sao Tome
The ocean breezes on the Central African island nation of São Tome and Príncipe help keep pollution levels very low.
There is little heavy industry on the two island, helping keep pollution levels low.

The continent of Oceania is home to 10 of the world's top 20 cleanest air cities and includes the capital of Samoa, Apia., ranked in fifth place.

The city has implemented new strategies to achieve net zero status by 2030.
3. Hobart
Hobart's surrounding areas of wilderness and location on the coast of Tasmania help the city receive clean sea breezes that improve its air quality.
The city helps local communities care for green spaces and local biodiversity, and also has educational programs for residents to learn about energy efficiency.

The Brazilian city of Manaus, built deep in the Amazon rainforest, is in second spot.
The surrounding vast rainforests act as a natural air purifier.
1. Funafuti
Funafuti, the capital of the Pacific island nation Tuvalu, takes the top spot for having the cleanest air globally.
The city scores heavily for its remote location in the South Pacific far from major sources of industrial pollution.
There is also no heavy industry on the small island nation.
