Volunteers who helped after Germanwings tragedy caught up in Paris terror attacks

More than 1000 volunteers who helped after a Germanwings co-pilot deliberately crashed his aircraft in the French Alps killing all 150 people on board were caught in the lockdown at the Stade de France after two suicide bomb attacks on Friday night.

Germanwings' parent company Lufthansa had chartered a train to take around 1200 emergency workers and volunteers to Paris to see the international football friendly between France and Germany.

The volunteers who were being thanked for helping in the aftermath of the harrowing crash in March are now coping with another tragedy after the bombings that were part of what appear to be a series of coordinated terror attacks that left at least 128 people dead and up to 99 critically injured.

Airbus communications chief Rainer Ohler, who was at the match along with chief executive Tom Enders said the event was "was supposed to be an evening of French and German celebration and appreciation after that tragic event".

"We heard the explosions and at first nobody thought of terrorism. It was only when President Hollande left and people started getting phone messages that we realised what was going on," he said.

The heads of Lufthansa and Air France-KLM were also at the match, which France won 2-0.
