Giant swastika found underneath German sports club

Building workers in Germany have unearthed a giant concrete swastika.

The Nazi monolith, which spans 4m x 4m, was discovered buried under a sports field in the city of Hamburg, reports the Independent.

German news agency DPA said last Friday workers were excavating the area to build a changing room block when they found it.

Officials from the sports club at the Hein-Kling stadium in the city's Billstedt district said the swastika served as a foundation for a monument that was pulled down decades ago.

Authorities want to be rid of it as soon as they can.

But it’s so heavy it can’t be removed so they are planning to smash it to pieces with jackhammers.

The swastika is the latest find uncovered in Germany to date from Hitler’s Third Reich.

Two years ago an amateur archaeologist found a collection of gold coins worth $70,000 reportedly buried during the Nazi era.
