Fire department surprises firefighter's widow on her 100th birthday

A bouquet and a round of applause from an entire fire department was one surprise firefighter’s widow Jeanette Carty least expected on her 100th birthday, and will likely never forget.

The Virginian centenarian was stunned to find members of the Norfolk Fire-Rescue department lined up on her front lawn on June 22 in an impromptu celebration of her birthday.

“I was never more surprised in my life,” Ms Carty told TODAY US.

“To see the firemen all lined up with their red shirts and black pants… I was just overcome with appreciation. It was so exciting."

Ms Carty received a round of applause from dozens of firefighters, who also gave her a bouquet of flowers.

The department’s honorary visit follows the death of Ms Carty’s husband Joe in 2008 at the age of 94.

The Cartys had been married for 74 years.

Mr Carty had worked as part of the Norfolk Fire-Rescue department, from 1942 and 1972.

Norfolk Battalion Chief Julian Williamson said the department’s visit was motivated by a sense of family.

"That's the real big connection, just that family lineage that has served in this department,'' he told TODAY US.

"It's that way with fire departments. Once you're in and you serve, you're part of a close-knit family."
