A six-year-old US boy has had to be rescued by a cherry picker after climbing 15m up a tree and getting stuck.

The boy’s anxious parents called the fire brigade to the scene in North Carolina on Saturday and photos show the small child perched almost at the top of the tall and slender tree.

The boy didn’t realise how high he had climbed and had gotten stuck amongst the smaller branches, WNCN reports.

When firefighters asked the boy why he climbed that far, he reportedly told them he “just felt like climbing”.

The boy stayed in the tree while firefighters brought a cherry picker to lower him to the ground safely.

Faison Fire and Rescue chief Rodney Lambert later tweeted that he was proud of his crew on a job well done.

"Great thinking outside the box to bring everyone down safe. Makes my job as chief easy to have a group who can handle anything," Chief Lambert wrote.
