Cinema fight breaks out among teens armed with machetes

Families with young children were reportedly queuing to watch Frozen 2 at a British cinema when a violent fight broke out among teenagers armed with machetes.

A 13-year-old girl was among six teenagers arrested over the brawl at the Star City complex in Birmingham on Saturday afternoon local time, Birmingham police said.

Up to 100 teenagers were involved in the fight, which left seven officers injured.

"This was a major outbreak of trouble which left families who were just trying to enjoy a night out at the cinema understandably frightened," police Superintendent Ian Green said.

"We worked quickly to move the crowds on, but were met with a very hostile response and officers had to draw Tasers to restore order." 

The brawl took place on the opening night of a movie about warring gangs, called Blue Story, however it was unclear whether the fight broke out at the same time as the movie was screening, the Guardian reports.

Families waiting to enter a theatre showing Frozen 2 were caught up in the violence.

A witness said she saw "a young boy was crying on the floor with his mother" as the fight broke out, the Independent reported.

In response to the brawl, cinema chain Vue said it had decided to pull Blue Story from all of its 225 cinemas in the UK.

Rachael Allison told the Press Association: "The police told everyone to leave the cinema as they held Taser guns in their hands and started to bring in guard dogs.

"I spoke to a policeman who told me it is unclear whether the kids had weapons and also stated when kids fight they bring their group of friends."

The officers who were hurt had suffered minor facial injuries, Supt Green said.
