Engine failure sends $35m Apache chopper plummeting into the drink

A $35 million Apache attack helicopter spectacularly crashed into waters off a Greek beach after its engines failed during a training exercise yesterday.

Two crew members survived the high impact accident, which sent the chopper flipping tail over cockpit, near the city of Thessaloniki, ABC reports.

Footage of the multi-million dollar mechanical failure was recorded by a civilian bystander on the beach watching the US-built choppers perform high performance aerial manoeuvres.

Several Apaches, which are capable of speeds up to 300km/h, buzzed towards the shoreline just metres above the water, before banking sharply skyward.

Both crew members were transported to a nearby military hospital but neither suffered serious injuries.
