Tsunami warning cancelled after major quake off Indonesia's coast

A tsunami warning has been cancelled after an earthquake struck off the Indonesian coast.

The quake was first detected at sea near southern Sumatra, just after 6am today.

The US Geological Survey said it measured at a magnitude of 7.1, at a depth of 15.5 kilometres.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the quake registered at magnitude 6.9.

A tsunami warning was issued for parts of Indonesia, but has since been cancelled.

There is no tsunami threat to Australia.
