Drone footage of war torn Donetsk Airport

Patches of scorched earth peek out from under snow-caked eerie ruins.

The charred and splintered remains of buildings stand abandoned and destroyed.

Near broken pieces of a passenger plane, large areas of the ground are peppered with massive holes.

The scene is the Donetsk Airport in eastern Ukraine and footage from a drone flown over the area is the newest indicator of the devastation caused in the ongoing conflict that grips the country.

The footage shows how the airport has been reduced to rubble after being destroyed by bitter fighting between Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russia separatists.

The opposing sides have been battling to capture the site since early September, according to the New York Times .

The footage was reportedly recorded on January 15 by a fundraising group that calls itself Army SOS.

The airport has been closed since early last year after rebels took control of the site after Petro Poroshenko won the Ukrainian presidential election on May 26.

Donetsk Airport takes its name from 20th Century composer Sergei Prokofiev.
