Donald Trump launches his own blog in the wake of Twitter ban

For months Donald Trump has been floating the idea of starting his own social media platform, after being banned from Twitter and Facebook.

And today he has announced the launch of what is effectively a blog – a series of tweet-like comments that appear only on his personal website.

Instead of a social media platform, only Mr Trump is able to post messages on his website – though supporters can click a button to share his posts on Twitter or Facebook.

Unlike Twitter or Facebook, supporters and detractors are unable to respond to his posts.

He launched his blog with a video posting on his website.

"In a time of silence and lies, a beacon of freedom arises," the video said.

"A place to speak freely and safely, straight from the desk of Donald J Trump."

So far his messages on his website read like his tweets, gloating when bad things happen to his critics, and complaining about the election results.

"So nice to see RINO (Republican in name only) Mitt Romney booed off the stage at the Utah Republican State Convention," he wrote.

"They are among the earliest to have figured this guy out, a stone cold loser!"

He also celebrated Twitter's stock price falling, cast dispersions on Georgia and Arizona's vote-count procedures, and cheered on the bad poll numbers of fellow Republican Liz Cheney.

"Heartwarming to read new polls on big-shot warmonger Liz Cheney of the great State of Wyoming.

"She is so low that her only chance would be if vast numbers of people run against her which, hopefully, won't happen.

"They never liked her much, but I say she'll never run in a Wyoming election again."

Ms Cheney was one of a handful of congressional Republicans to vote in favour of impeachment.

Mr Trump has barely been seen outside his private country club, Mar-a-Lago, since leaving the White House.

He has been filmed making speeches at weddings held at the venue, including one in March where he makes only the most fleeting mention of the couple.

In his public statements he has railed against other prominent Republicans, including his Vice President Mike Pence and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
