Presidential hopeful Donald Trump’s campaign team apologise after posting image of soldiers in Nazi uniforms

The rocky start to US presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign has continued after the real estate mogul’s Twitter account posted an image featuring men that appear to be wearing Nazi military uniforms.

Accompanied by the hashtag #MakeAmericaGreatAgain, the image featured a typically dramatic collage of Trump’s head superimposed on the American flag alongside $100 bills, the White House and a number of soldiers in the bottom right hand corner.

There was just one problem – the soldiers appeared to be wearing uniforms associated with World War II German soldiers, complete with the SS eagle emblem on the left arm.

The image was quickly deleted, but not before the Twittersphere nabbed screenshots of the gaffe.

Social media sleuths tracked down the original stock image used to create the collage, while one war historian confirmed the uniform was that of the notorious Waffen-SS Nazi military squad.

The US political website Mother Jones reports the original image was taken at a World War II re-enactment in the past five years in Kent, England by photographer George Cairns.

Mr Trump’s team blamed the error on a “young intern”.

“Mr Trump has been in Charlottesville, Virginia all day at the opening of a development,” his team said in a statement.

“A young intern created and posted the image and did not see the very faded figures within the flag of the stock photo.

“The intern apologised and immediately deleted the tweet.”

It is the latest in a string of controversial media storms in recent weeks for Mr Trump.

In his campaign announcement speech, he vowed to build a wall between Mexico and the United States – at Mexico’s expense – to reduce illegal immigration and drug running.

“They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists,” he said.

Among the broadcasters and companies to sever ties with the presidential hopeful are Univision, NBC Universal, Macy’s, The City of New York, ESPN, NASCAR and the US Professional Golfers’ Association.
