A diver has become an internet sensation after video of him swimming between two continents without any effort was watched more than 25 million times.

Hashem Al-Ghaili uploaded the one-minute video to Facebook this week, showing him with his arms outstretched in a tiny crevice between Europe and North America.

In the crystal-clear water in Iceland’s Thingvellir Lake, where visibility is more than 100m, Mr Al-Ghaili touches both continents in a mind-boggling feat only possible in one place in the world.

According to the video, the fissure is a crack in the tectonic plates, which are moving away from each other at a rate of about 2cm a year.

The water is some of the world’s clearest and remains between 2 and 4 degrees all year round.
