A South Korean chemical factory has partially exploded, killing a worker and injuring four others.

The chemical plant in in Chilgok, North Gyeongsang Province, was ripped apart on Wednesday morning after an oxygen tank exploded, igniting a nearby silo full of chemicals.

Local media reported a 46-year-old worker was taken to hospital but died from his injuries.

Dash cam footage from a car stopped at traffic outside the factory showed the extent of the blast, which engulfed part of the nearby street in a ball of fire.

South Korean safety officials were quick to contain the blast, insisting no chemicals managed to leak into the water table.
