Daring Brazilian thief dynamites ATM

A committed criminal left little chance during an ATM robbery in Brazil this week, using an explosive thought to be dynamite to blow up the machine before making off with whatever was left of the cash inside.

The brazen act occurred in a shopping complex in Ponta Grossa, a municipality in the state of Parana, on Wednesday.

Security vision shows the crook prising and stabbing at the machine, like a farmer tilling soil, to ready it for the explosive device.

Satisfied with his work, the crim, dressed in stylish monochrome replete with black facemask, proceeds to plant what appears to be either a stick of dynamite or a pipe-bomb.

The device activated, the thief sprints to safety while the fuse spits cartoonishly before exploding and filling the area with smoke.

The masked man then returns and, under the cover of the haze, makes off with whatever is left for the taking.

According to local media, five hoods suspected of gang activity were clapped in June this year with around 45kg of dynamite, which police estimated was enough to roll about 120 ATMs.

"We spent six months investigating this gang," police commander Silvanei Almeida Gomes told Parana RPC at the time.

"There are strong indications that this year they are responsible for 11 cases of theft at ATMs."
