Coronavirus: British public in nationwide clap for NHS

The British public has shown its support for the nation's National Health Service (NHS) with a public round of applause for the medics in the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic.

Thousands of people up and down the country clapped from balconies, windows and doorways at 8pm.

The campaign has been circulating widely on social media.

Royalty, celebrities and sports stars showed their support by posting clapping videos. They included Prince George, six, Princess Charlotte, four, and Prince Louis, one.

Some people banged on pots and pans to show extra support.

The organisers of the campaign - which started online - decided to hold it because "during these unprecedented times they (NHS staff) need to know we are grateful".

They say the UK's frontline medical workers face an unprecedented challenge and the best thing the public can do in return, other than staying at home, is thank those risking their own health to help others.

Landmarks across the country are also lit up with blue for the salute, including the Wembley Arch, the Principality Stadium, the Royal Albert Hall and Lincoln Cathedral.

This tribute is part of the #LightItBlue campaign, organised by members of the entertainment industry to thank the NHS.
