China's thick smog captured from the air

A GoPro camera mounted onto a model airplane has captured just how thick China's smog problem is.

The video was shot above the city of Tianjin in Hebei Province near Beijing and the drone is claimed to have travelled 4572 metres high before it completely broke through the pollution.

The footage captures the sun from ground level appearing as a small orange speck shrouded by dark brown smog.

It follows the sun which becomes bigger and brighter as the plane gains height, and then eventually we see a burst of blue sky.

"Finally, Chinese can see the same sun as American," YouTube user Hai Zheng captioned in his video.

"Only if they can live upon 15,000 feet high."

China is infamous for its terrible urban air pollution, with the country seeing a boom in sales of air purifiers and masks.

Environmental health experts say China's smog is largely the result of burning coal.
