A Mexican citizen journalist who tweeted about the atrocities committed by cartel members in her city has had her own execution live tweeted by the gangsters she sought to expose.

The woman known as Felina posted under the Twitter handle @Miut3 and used the hashtag #reynosafollow to report on the crimes of drug cartels in the border city of Reynosa.

Felina was also an administrator for the 'Valour por Tamaulipas', which has more than 100,000 followers on Twitter and over half a million on Facebook.

She would live Tweet about kidnapping, extortion, arson and murder until her online activities led to her death.

Last week a number of posts from her Twitter account gave the impression she had been kidnapped and culminated in a photo of her dead body after she was shot in the face..

"Friends and family, my real name is Maria Del Rosario Fuentes Rubio, I’m a doctor and today, my life has come to an end," the first Tweet read.

"I can only tell you to not make the same mistake I did, it doesn't benefit you, quite the opposite as I realise today."

Minutes later an ominous post warned that "death is closer to us than you think".

Her final Tweet warned other to "close your accounts, don't risk your families the way I did" followed by a photo of Felina alive and one her dead body.

Police are investigating.
