Statue for slain Aussie surfers Callum and Jake Robinson unveiled in Mexico

A statue honouring the lives of Australian brothers Callum and Jake Robinson and their American friend Carter Rhoad has been unveiled in Mexico just over a year after they were killed.

The three were allegedly murdered while on a surfing trip in Baja California, one of the country's most violent states, last April in what police say was a "robbery gone wrong" even as their execution-like killings raised suspicions that their deaths could be linked to organised crime.

Now, three statues have been unveiled at Punta San José in memory of the trio.

"This sculpture is a reminder that even though our sons are no longer with us physically, their spirits are still moving in the waves and carried by the ocean they loved," parents Martin and Debra Robinson said.

The sculpture was designed with three intertwined wooden forms, each standing at six feet tall, overlooking the sea where the men spent their final days.

The artwork was made to "symbolise memory, unity and the enduring power of nature" and the "boys' deep connection to the ocean".

The statues' unveiling was attended by locals, and Mexican and Australian officials.

The sculpture has been supported by the Callum and Jake Robinson Foundation, which was established to commemorate the way the brothers lived in a way that encourages everyone to "live bigger, shine brighter and love harder".
