Hair-raising photos reveal huge cruise liner squeezing through the Corinth Canal

A 22.5-metre cruise liner carrying more than 900 passengers has claimed to be the largest vessel to pass through the Corinth Canal in Greece.

Some careful manoeuvring allowed the Braemar cruise liner, to squeeze down the narrow canal which measures just 25 metres in width at its widest point, leaving less than 1.5 metres on either side.

Nail-biting photos show the enormous boat narrowly missing the rocky walls of the canal as passengers gathered on the upper deck to witness the scene.

Ships have been navigating through the narrow waterways since 1893 but the cruise ship, weighing 24,344 gross tons, and stretching 195.82 meters long, has claimed the title of the longest vessel to make it through the narrow passage.

"Today Braemar made history as the longest-ever ship to cruise through the Corinth Canal," Fred Olsen cruise liners said on social media.

The ship was assisted by a tug boat that helped avoid any bumps as it made it's way down the 6.3km canal.

The Corinth Canal is a tidal waterway connecting the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf, dividing the Pelopónnisos from mainland Greece, shortening the sea route from Italian ports to the port of Athens.
