Treasure retrieved from a pond in Bavaria by a small boy.

A five-year-old boy has stumbled on tens of thousands of dollars in jewellery while on a picnic with his family in Bavaria.

The boy's father said the youngster was on Wednesday playing on the edge of a pond in the village of Heideck, south of Nuremberg, when he noticed something "glittering" in the water.

"At first we just thought that it was wire or something like that," he told the Donaukurier newspaper. "But then we saw there was a fine necklace and that there were a few more in the water."

The family helped the youth taking necklaces out of the water before discovering a bag full of jewellery.

After noticing price tags with a jeweller's name on some of the items the family called the store in question and were told the items had been stolen.

Police said the stash was initially believed to be worth around 10,000 Euro (15,000 AUD) but later revised the figure to tens of thousands of euros.

It is believed there is more treasure hidden in the water and police divers have been sent into the pond to search.

Police said in a statement the jewellery was “clearly loot”.

“There are several hundred precious items and less valuable jewels,” the statement read. "Some belongs to a jewellery shop in Erlangen which was robbed in January, but it is unclear how the treasure came to be in the village pond."
