Bouncer strikes Rogers on back of head

A blow to the back of Chris Roger’s head with the first ball of day two of the second Test has evoked memories of the tragic accident that ended the life of Phil Hughes.

Rogers was struck when he lost sight of a bouncer from James Anderson. The batsman, starting the day on 158, failed to duck or lean away, only managing to turn his head as the ball smashed into the added protective covering that extends down the back of his helmet.

That covering has been adopted by batsmen around the world since the death of Australian Test batsman Phil Hughes. The extra protection is designed to protect vital arteries that run from the neck into the head.

Rogers, playing in what will be his last Ashes series, missed both Tests in the West Indies because of concussion after being hit in the head during a net session. The veteran opening batsman received attention from team physio Alex Kountouris and doctor Peter Bruknerstaff but suffered only a cut on this occasion and was able to carry on batting. Anderson was quick to show his concern as was teammate Steve Smith.

Rogers was eventually bowled for 173 by Stuart Broad and left the ground to a standing ovation.
