Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that a blast that ripped through a St Petersburg supermarket the previous day was the result of an act of terrorism.

"You know that yesterday in St Petersburg a terrorist act was carried out," Putin told the audience.

"And that recently the Federal Security Service prevented another attempted terrorist act."

Ten people were wounded in the attack, with Russian officials saying none of them have life-threatening injuries.

Russian media reports said the bomb had been hidden in a locker where shoppers leave their belongings in a branch of the Perekrestok supermarket chain.

The Russian Investigative Committee (SKR) said that the explosive device contained the equivalent of 200 grams of TNT and was packed with shrapnel.
