A rare beluga whale birth in captivity has been captured on camera.

The white whale became a mother for the first time on Wednesday at the Changsha Underwater World in central China after a 15-month pregnancy, The Telegraph reports.

The footage shows the large sea mammal swimming around with its calf's tail protruding from its stomach before it finally slides out with a squirt of blood.

The eight-year-old mum was in labour for five hours before finally giving birth.

Staff at the aquarium said it was the first time a beluga whale had been successfully bred in captivity in China.

The Russian born beluga will not perform in whale shows for the next two years so it can look after its baby.
