A heartbreaking video has emerged from Thailand of a baby monkey refusing to leave the lifeless body of its mother after she was hit by a motorbike.

The mother was filmed lying dead in the outskirts of Bangkok, with the baby clinging to her fur, seemingly waiting for her to wake up.

It cries in distress and looks around in hope, and then sits up as the cameraman approaches.

Seemingly realising the cameraman cannot help, the baby monkey cuddles up to her and starts crying again.

It is not known how old the monkey in the video is.

Monkeys can live up to 35 years.

Their numbers in Thailand were becoming so great veterinarians launched a sterilising drive in 2009 to limit the population after complaints about their increasingly aggressive behaviour towards tourists, Reuters reports.
