The accidental death of baby gorilla Kabibe has shocked zoo staff.  San Francisco Zoo

A 15-month-old gorilla at the San Francisco Zoo in the US has been crushed to death when she unexpectedly darted beneath a closing hydraulic door.

Kabibe, a western lowland gorilla who was born in captivity, was killed as she and other gorillas were being moved into their night quarters last Friday.

"Some animal deaths are more difficult to process than others, and this tragedy has struck us all in the deepest way imaginable," the zoo's executive director and president, Tanya Peterson, said in a statement.

The death has devasted zoo staff, who provided 24-hour postnatal car for Kabibe until she was six months old, when she was introduced to the zoo's gorilla family, SFGate reports.

Kabibe's name means "little lady" in Swahili.

The zoo said it will review its policies, procedures and training to see if changes are needed.
