The boy later surrendered to police and was arrested.

Local police said the pair were schoolmates and organised a fight to settle an ongoing feud.

The accused boy told police they agreed to meet outside a grocery store near their homes in the Sattahip district, more than 100 kilometres south of Bangkok.

The victim is reportedly a school student in Thailand and has a Thai mother and an Australian father.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed an Australian had died in Thailand.

"The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian who died in Thailand," it said in a statement
