The family of 23-year-old Reece Harding told the ABC they received a message telling them to call an overseas number on Monday.

When Mr Harding's father Keith rang the number a man on the other line explained that Reece had died on Saturday after stepping on the mine.

A post on the Lions of Rojava Facebook page said Mr Harding died during a night-time mission.

"It was Saturday the 27th at 10pm when our Australian warrior Reece Harding – nom de guerre Heval Bagok Australi – stepped on a mine and died in combat," the post read.

Five other men were reportedly injured in the incident.

He is the second Australian to die fighting for the Lions of Rojava, with former ADF reservist Ashley Johnson having being killed in Iraq in February.
