Australian man drowns while surfing popular beach in Indonesia

An Australian man has drowned while surfing alone off the shores of Indonesia.

Andrew Richard Wiseman had headed out along Tanjung Aan beach off Lombok on Sunday morning while feeling unwell.

A group of passers-by, including another Australian, managed to bring Mr Wiseman to shore of the popular beach in a boat however attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

“It is believed that the victim died when he was surfing because he was unwell. Before going to surf he had told witnesses that he felt a pain in his left shoulder,” Lombok Tengah Police chief Kholilur Rochman said.

Mr Wiseman’s brother, Steven – who lives in Lombok and runs Jivana Resort Kuta - posted a touching tribute to his sibling.

“Will always love you Andy, you still make me smile,” he posted on Facebook next to a photo of the brothers.

Mr Wiseman was originally from Sydney and lived in Lombok.

It's believed he worked as a chef.
